Tonight we took on the Members Only jackets of Veni Vidi Bocce. They've picked up a Sweet Meat for the new season and were a finalist last season, so I don't need to tell you that they can hold their own. But we took it to them anyway, despite being short a couple of fowl.
Game 1 started off aces as we built a 6-0 lead. Newcomer Nancy was once again making her case for Rookie of the Year. Then it got dicey. They clawed back to 6-3 and were in position to get more points before an errant ball gave us the win. Hey, we're not choosy, so we'll take it. The less said about Game 2 the better, other than that Ezra needs to stop lifting weights or start playing more long games. It was an ugly 1-7 defeat. Game 3 looked like trouble, too, as Marc and Mooney came in on a new side in put us in a 1-2 hole. But Yu and I scraped a point together and then a perfectly executed "take the Pollino to the back" move by the boys gave us a 4-spot. It was academic from there as Yu played long and made a great opening shot from which the VVB boys could not recover.
A winning streak to start the season! That's more like it. The Wildfowl will be looking to peck the eyes out of JTBP next week. Beware the caw!

The "Caw" Tolls for Thee
It looks like 2009 might be the year of the Wildfoul. Yesterday, birds attempted to take down an entire jet in a blatant act of terrorism (thwarted by Sully the pilot, fortunately for all involved). While we support Marauding in most of it's forms, the kind that end with death and destruction are not cool (some light pillaging in the form of a missing piece of luggage or two would have been acceptable). And in football, the Cardinals, Eagles and Ravens are still alive for a shot at the Super Bowl. Bill Simmons mentions this tidbit in today's column:
Eerie, no? If I were you, I'd be wagering on the Wildfoul taking the Floyd Bocce Championship now while the odds are still good.
So you have the Cardinals beating the Seahawks in Week 17, then the Falcons in Round 1, and now, potentially, the Eagles in the NFC title game. Meanwhile, if the Ravens topple the Steelers, then the Cardinals could potentially beat every other NFL team with a bird nickname during their improbable five-game winning streak to capture the Super Bowl, and if that's not enough, birds took down Thursday's U.S. Airways flight heading from New York to Charlotte ... the city that's home to the team Arizona beat five days ago in Round 2.

Wyldefoulz on the prowl
With a new season upon us and several new team members taking wing (just wait - the bird metaphors have only just begun), the Marauding Wildfowl swooped in to take on the BocceGalupes on Monday night. Monday night is undergoing a transition as a lot of older teams have moved to different days or are taking a season off. But Boccelism - the defending champs, 5-time winners and long-time rivals - are still around, giving the league a necessary villain and our team a target to shoot for.
It turns out we had a connection to the Galupes which got usSo it was good to see the new folks come out firing. I don't know everyone's bird nicknames yet, but Nancy was on fire the whole game and she and Neal capture 3 points in 2 rounds, while Yu and I managed to get 4 in our only turn as we took the first game 7-0.
Game 2 saw the return of the veterans as Kaci, Hawkeye and Wild Turkey and despite some early season jitters/suckitude, we were able to make a convincing 7-2 statement. Nancy was again in mid-season form, nailing every shot. We may have stumbled onto a gold mine.
All-in-all, a great start. The main contentious issue is the team name. No one seems to love it, but no seems to despise it either. There was some discussion of dropping the "Marauding" and of how to spell the second part. The consumption of alcohol may have had something to do with the determination to change "fowl" to "foul" and to spell Wild with a "y". The "z" may have been my idea, along with the pursuit of some sort of Mountain Dew sponsorship. We don't play again for 3 weeks, so perhaps there will be some sort of finalization before that. Either way, should be a fun season.
